Great Hall of the People

Great Hall of the People 2Originally, I planned to visit Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum but we didn’t realize that the Mausoleum closed early.  So, we visited The Great Hall of the People.  The building was constructed in in 1959 in just ten months by volunteers and is the home of the national peoples congress.

Tourist are not allowed access to all of the building’s rooms however, the main auditorium of the Great Hall of the People is well worth the visit.  It can seat all 10,000 representatives of China Parliament. In addition, there is a banquet room that can entertain up to 7,000 guest and several regional halls decorated in the  local style.

Entry is 30 yuan or 15 yuan with a student id.  Visiting hours vary due so its best just to walk up and see if you can buy a ticket.  You can’t miss it, it is the massive building on the west side of Tiananmen Square.
